Women land rights training in Taita Taveta county

Women contribute up to 80% of workforce yet they only hold 1% of the registered land in their names and around 5-6% of registered titles are held in joint names this according to a report by Kenya Land Alliance 2013.

Mama006 Lydia Haika says it’s high time as a nation we confront the deep inequalities in land and property through effective implementation of the constitution provision to secure women land rights.
” An improvement in women’s independent property rights accords women greater control over agricultural income, gain higher shares of business and labor market earning and frequently receive credit. But without targeted interactions through policies and laws on behalf of women’s right to land, poverty and food security is inevitable. ” said Hon. Haika

On the issue of women and mining after carefully listening to the challenges facing female miners, mama county has assured the miners to conduct civic education an inform them of the permits under the new constitution that allows them to conduct business freely even without the licenses. To push for the reduction of exorbitant fees charged to small scale miners especially our women and youth. To work closely with the County Gem center to ensure that there is efficient service delivery so that our miners reap from their hard work and eliminate middles men. Lastly equip them with the necessary tools and equipment to ease their work.
